Onion Smash Burgers and Fries (Low-Carb Option)
Ingredients
For the Onion Smash Burgers (Bun-Free):
• 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
• 2 large onions, halved and separated into thick layers (to serve as buns)
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp onion powder
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 4 slices of cheddar or American cheese
• Butter or oil (for cooking)
• Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or a low-carb burger sauce
For the Fries (Optional):
• 4 medium sweet potatoes (or russet potatoes for traditional fries)
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onion “Buns”:
1. Cut large onions in half, then carefully peel away the thickest layers to create “buns.” Aim for 2 layers per burger.
2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly cook the onion layers in butter or oil for about 2-3 minutes per side until slightly softened and golden but still firm enough to hold shape. Set aside.
2. Smash the Burgers:
1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal balls. Season each ball generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
2. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle to high heat and lightly oil it. Place a beef ball on the hot surface and use a spatula or burger press to smash it down into a thin patty.
3. Cook for 2-3 minutes until crispy on the edges, then flip and cook for 1-2 minutes.
4. Top each patty with a slice of cheese and allow it to melt.
3. Prepare the Fries (Optional):
1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Cut potatoes into strips or wedges.
2. Toss potatoes with olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
4. Assemble the Burgers:
1. Place a cheesy smash burger patty between two cooked onion layers.
2. Add optional toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, or sauce if desired.
5. Serve:
1. Plate the onion smash burgers alongside the fries (if included) and enjoy!
These Onion Smash Burgers replace traditional buns with caramelized onion layers, creating a flavorful, low-carb option that’s just as satisfying as the classic! Perfect for anyone craving a lighter, bun-free twist.
